The “Génesis” Grammy brought corridos into an institutional conversation.
Peso Pluma’s first win recognized an album that took tumbados to another scale.
At the February 2024 Grammy ceremony, GÉNESIS won Best Música Mexicana Album, including Tejano. It was Peso Pluma’s first Grammy win. The category spans several styles; the award recognized this album in that year, not the invention of a genre.
The Recording Academy described the album as a blend of corridos tumbados, brass, bass lines and requintos. That musical language helps explain the moment: a sound shaped in younger, digital circles entered an institutional stage while retaining recognizable elements of its own.
Our reading: a trophy does not decide when a sound began to matter. It does record when an institution chose to recognize it. Celebrate the win and keep listening to the composers, musicians and scenes that made it possible.
